Zoom Movie/Bible Study about Racism

July 10, 2020 by St Mary Anne Admin

An ongoing conversation about racism is needed. We as a church, following Christ, are called to love God and love our neighbors–meaning all people.

In order to take this conversation deeper, we are beginning an online group bible study discussion utilizing the movie, “Just Mercy”, released in 2019.

On June 15, Carol Weisel and Janice Flood will facilitate the discussion. The plan is watch “Just Mercy” individually, and then set a time to discuss it online together. A curriculum from Grace Episcopal Church, Silver Spring, MD will guide the discussion. The movie is now available on many online venues.

Here is a synopsis of “Just Mercy”: After graduating from Harvard, Bryan Stevenson heads to Alabama to defend those wrongly condemned or those not afforded proper representation. One of his first cases is that of Walter McMillian, who is sentenced to die in 1987 for the murder of an 18-year-old girl, despite evidence proving his innocence. In the years that follow, Stevenson encounters racism and legal and political maneuverings as he tirelessly fights for McMillian’s life. Stars: Michael B. Jordan, Jaime Foxx & Brie Larson
